Chm 115 - lecture 22 inter-molecular forces and formation of solutions. Intermolecular forces are the forces of attraction and repulsion between molecules. Many intermolecular forces involve dipoles and induced dipoles. An induced dipole is when the electron distribution in a non-polar molecule or atom is polarized by a nearby polar or charged species. Different intermolecular forces can be present in liquids and solids at the same time. Intermolecular forces are an important factor in the formation of solutions. Determine how the different molecules will interact. In order for a solution to form, the forces of attraction between the molecules in each component must be broken and forces of attraction between the different molecules must form. Species with similar intermolecular forces are more likely to form solutions than those with different intermolecular forces. Oil and water do not form solutions because of their differing intermolecular forces. They can form colloids with the help of a detergent.
