CHM 25500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Sigma Bond, Acetylene
Document Summary
Chm 255 - lecture 5 - hybridization of atomic orbitals sp3 hybrid orbitals. Hybrid orbitals occur when the electrons in an atom are rearranged in order to bond more effectively to another atom. The s orbital combines with the three p orbitals to form four sp3 hybrid orbitals. Hybrid orbitals can participate in bonding or they can contain unshared electron pairs. Four carbon sp3 orbitals combine with the 1s orbitals of four hydrogen atoms to form four sigma bonds. Hybrid orbitals can bond with s orbitals as well as other hybrid orbitals. Includes 6 c-h sigma bonds formed by the overlap of sp3 orbitals and s orbitals, and one c-c sigma bond formed by the overlap of two sp3 orbitals sp2 hybrid orbitals. Sp2 hybrid orbitals are created when two p orbitals combine with one s orbital to create three sp2 hybrid orbitals, with one leftover p orbital. The leftover p orbitals participate in pi bonding.
