Social conflict theory: social behavior is best understood through competition between groups. (cid:895) Explains society is created via ongoing conflict between key groups: groups = main economic classes. Material inequalities = driving force behind many social problems. Marx & weber: coercion/force not consensus is what maintains social order, saw conflict of social scarcities. Marx: class struggle between proletariat (capitalist) and bourgeoisie (workers) for economic control of society. Weber: agreed on importance of wealth; but said that power and status are just as equal. Society is composed of groups that each seek own self-interest, struggle to make theirs #1.
