Document Summary

Asexual reproduction: reproduction that does not involve the fusion of haploid gametes. Sexual reproduction: a form of reproduction in which genetic material from two parent organisms is combined in the offspring, usually two haploid gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote. Gonads: an organ where reproductive cells are formed; in males, testes and in females, eggs. Zygote: in sexual reproduction, a diploid cell (the fertilized egg) formed by the fusion of two haploid gametes. Budding: in asexual reproduction by the growth of a miniature copy, of the adult animal on some part of the body of the parent. The bud breaks off to begin independent existence. Regeneration: the regrowth of a body part after loss or damage; also, asexual reproduction by means of the regrowth of an entire body from a fragment. Fission: asexual reproduction by dividing the body into two smaller, complete organisms. Parthenogenesis: an asexual specialization of sexual reproduction, in which a haploid egg undergoes development without fertilization.
