Document Summary

Classification of tissues: histology: the study of tissues. Tissue: a group of cells that are similar in structure, function, and embryonic origin. Types of tissues: epithelial tissue (covering, lining, glandular), connective tissue (support), muscle tissue (movement), nervous tissue (rapid control: epithelial tissue breakdown. Stratified: more than one layer of cells. Pseudostratified: one layer of cells but looks like more than one later of cells; not all cells reach the apical surface. Squamous: flat, scale like, 6-sided, with a centrally located nucleus, wider than it is tall. Cuboidal: cube like, about equal in height and width, centrally located nucleus, 6 sided. Columnar: columns; taller than they are wide, with basally located nucleus; 6 sided. Transitional: shape changed from rounded cuboidal to squamous-like depending on degree of stretching of tissue: apical vs. basal. Apical: top layer of cells, at the lumen (inside of a tube) Cilia: hair-like made of microtubules; function in movement of substances ie. moving mucus along.
