Document Summary

Racism and research: the case of the tuskegee syphilis study, allan m. brandt. Brandt recounts in detail the abuses of human rights and the deliberate harm perpetrated in the infamous tuskegee syphilis study, probably the most egregious example of unethical research in american history. There were no scientific methods involved in this study. The researchers merely wanted to examine what would happen if syphilis went untreated for a long period of time. In order to get people to sign up for this study, they advertised treatment for the disease. They made people believe that they would receive treatment if they participated, which was far from the truth. Vonderlehr found that only the offer of treatment elicited the cooperation of the men. They were told they were ill and were promised free care. Offered therapy, they became willing subjects (vaughn, 318).
