To provide the basic knowledge for you to. Understand the importance of a crime scene: identify relevant evidence, preserve the scene and evidence, document the scene and evidence, collect evidence, maintain integrity of evidence, identify or eliminate a candidate, protect the general public. Any city police department: standard operation procedures, crime scene response manual, accreditation guidelines and protocols. Protect the scene make sure the perimeter is large enough internal and exterior perimeters. Uniformed personnel are responsible for external security. Keep unauthorized personnel out of the scene, regardless of rank. Learn what resources are available to you. Follow directions unless you are in charge. Make sure your search is legal: emergency circumstances, search warrant, written consent, verbal consent can be recanted at any time, illegal search = inadmissible evidence in court, incidental to arrest hot pursuit. Documents the crime scene before anything is moved or touched. Photographs can be used to refresh witness recollection when testifying.
