Hegemony: we freely consent to the system. People who rebelled were killed laborers are expendable. Ideology/interpellation: the things we study in literature. Hegemony and ideology restrains us from rebelling. Hegemony happens at a level of culture. Ideology is personal, happens at a level of desire. Marist critique of how a society starts. Reification: reduces social relations, ideas, and even people to things, intensifying alienation. Example: workers who make shoes don"t get benefits. Wedding ring: reifies social relation between husband and wife. Reciprocal relationship between base and super structure. Marxism focuses on history and social systems. Analyze and look at how social systems interacts. Economic base (mode of production) relation to production. Relation of production: laborers, teachers, workers, etc. This is what is reproduced in the system. Relative autonomy: little independence from the economic system. Can or cannot change the economic base. Things have come together in the system that doesn"t change the economic base.
