Child development proceeds along a predicable pathway. Various physical, social, and environmental factors, as well as disease can affect child. The range of normal development is wide development and health. The child"s developmental level affects how you conduct the history and physical examination. Physical development is faster during infancy than at any time. Approach the infant gradually, using toy or object for distraction. Perform much of the exam in the parent"s lap. Speak softly or mimic infants sounds to attract attention. Ask about infant"s strengths to elicit useful developmental and parenting information. If infant is cranky, make sure infant is well fed before proceeding. Start with infant sitting or lying in parent"s lap. Hungry infants may need to be fed first. Leave diaper in place until ready to examine genitals, rectum, lower spine and hips. More sensitive to illness, exercise and emotion. Ranges between 30 and 60 per minute.
