Can patient perform independently, need some help, entirely dependent on others. Functional assessment evaluates age related changes for optimal functioning. Assess: vision, hearing, leg mobility, urinary incontinence, nutrition and weight loss, memory, depression, physical disability. Present with atypical signs and symptoms of disease. When an elderly person becomes sick, symptoms may be vague because of changes in the immune system. Downplay symptoms and give a more positive evaluation of their health status. Arm and leg shows signs of atrophy. Benign essential tremors in head, jaw, lips or hands. Acute onset that can last hours to week. Slowly progressive that can take months to years. Normal or slow impairment until end stage. Difficulty in finding words depressed, cognitive decline. Have the patient listen carefully to and remember 3 unrelated words and then to repeat the words. Instruct them to draw a face on a clock and then put the arrows at a specific time.
