NUR 401 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Histamine, Opioid, Peripheral Nervous System
Document Summary
Neuroanatomy of the cns: cerebrum, subcortical structures, limbic system, other cns structures, autonomic nervous system. Wernicke"s area, located at the posterior aspect of the superior temporal gyrus, is primarily responsible for receptive speech: occipital, the primary visual area is located in the most posterior aspect of the occipital lobes. Damage to this area results in a condition called cortical blindness: association cortex recognizing objects, words, rather than color or shape, higher level of function. In addition, damage may produce abnormal movements, such as twitches or tremors. Autonomic nervous system: neurons of ans, efferent or motor system (nerves moving away from cns, afferent or sensory (nerves moving toward cns; fig. 6. 4: sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system (table 6. 1) First it is electrical, and then it is chemical. The electrical signal becomes another chemical signal. Neurotransmitters: directly or indirectly control opening or closing of ion channels, excitatory or inhibitory, types, cholinergic, biogenic amines, amino acid, neuropeptides (table 6. 2)
