Psychic determinism: belief that behavior does not just happen by chance and is instead governed by fate. Homeostasis of personality: traits balancing each other out. Closed system theory: personality operates on a fixed amount of psychic energy, or libido. Tip of the iceberg sensory awareness limited to what people are capable of sensing. Contains pieces of information that can be brought into conscious awareness when needed. Secondary censorship point: keeps threatening information out of our conscious awareness. Holds unacceptable memories, urges, desires, and impulses that could threaten a person"s social or moral standards. Compensatory automaticity: unconscious strategic compensation for unintended thoughts, feelings and behavior. Instincts: mental representations of bodily needs manifest themselves in the form of wishes and desire: characteristics of instinct: aim, pressure, object and source. Life instincts: use psychic energy for preserving an organism and achieving pleasure. Death instincts: desire to return to a simpler state. Believed to be present and fully functional at birth.
