Socialization is the only way to live in a civil society. Need to socialize child to break them out of this behavior. Libido: fuel or energy that moves us through the stages. How the libido gets satisfied depends on the stage. Two levels of freud: the literal level: what something objectively seems like. Example: eating seeing someone eating: the symbolic/psychological level: emotional nurturance. Example: eating has no connection to hunger. The psychosexual stages: oral stage: birth to two years (infancy) Food comes with nurturance baby is held during feeding. Symbolizes trust and development: anal stage: one and half to four years (toddler) Acting impulsively does not benefit you: phallic stage: five to seven years (school age) Issue is gender identity how you self identify. First time kids are going out in the world without parents. Notice the world around them males and females have different roles. Males and females pair up in complimentary roles.
