Child is separated/reunited with mother: secure attachment: (80%) protest departure and interact when she returns. Child is easily comforted: avoidant attachment: no reaction to mom leaving, child shows no attachment when she returns, resistant attachment: distressed when mother leaves, child clings/rejects when she returns, disorganized attachment: child is dazed/confused. With secure attachment the child is happier and becomes a better problem solver. Affectionate to all adults: attachment in making: prefer some adults, clear-cut: 6 months. Contact comfort is preferred over food-key to attachment. Mandated reporting: professionals suspect abuse and it has to be reported. They are protected by the law to report it. Most abused by parents-twice as likely by mothers than fathers. Helping abuse: home visits: supervise parent and child. Different levels of severity: aspergers: high functioning social disorder, severe forms: need care, can"t function in regular society, mental retardation. Have difficulty relating to people and may need a behaviorist. Stranger development: children panic around people they don"t know.
