KIN-10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Crisis Intervention
Introduction to Kinesiology
Notes
Josephy Yang
Behaviour: A unique way of responding to all stimuli
○ We all respond differently to situations
Performance: goal directed behaviour for the purpose of short term execution of discrete task
○ On a break away “ I need to score a goal”
Orientations to Sports and Exercise Psychology
1. Behavioral: Behaviour of athletes determined by environment
○ we can all train a skill- but how do we do under pressure?
○ What does psychological pressure do to performance
2. Psychpsychological: impact of physiological responses to activity on behaviour
○ “what if I swing and miss?”
○ Causes muscle tension, increase heart rate, etc
3. Cognitive-Behavioural: behaviour determined by interpretation of both environment and
cognition(thoughts)
Professional approaches
○ Clinical counseling: eating disorders
○ Crisis intervention: “slump busting”
○ Psychological Assessment
○ Performance enhancement
○ Consultation and program development
○ Prevention and Treatment of injuries
Sports Psychologist
○ Actual doctor
○ Medical school
Sports Psychology Consultant
○ Assists in diagnosis
○ Refer to actual doctor
What is sports psych?
○ Understand human behaviour and performance in sports and exercise how we go
about studying them and what factors should be included in study?
How do we learn?
○ Visual
○ Auditory
○ Experimental (actually doing it)
**PROBLEMS REQURE CHANGE**
Kolb’s Learning Cycle
1. Concrete experiment (CE)
○ actual feeling, ex. Swinging at a ball
2. Reflective observation (RO)
○ Watching what happened, ex. How far it went
3. Abstract Conceptualization (AC)
Document Summary
Behaviour: a unique way of responding to all stimuli. Performance: goal directed behaviour for the purpose of short term execution of discrete task. On a break away i need to score a goal . Orientations to sports and exercise psychology: behavioral: behaviour of athletes determined by environment. What does psychological pressure do to performance: psychpsychological: impact of physiological responses to activity on behaviour. Causes muscle tension, increase heart rate, etc: cognitive-behavioural: behaviour determined by interpretation of both environment and cognition(thoughts) Swinging at a ball: reflective observation (ro) How far it went: abstract conceptualization (ac) What can make it go further: active experimentation (ae) Any systematic study of sport psychology should include the following stages: Observation and description (what is) we want to understand how feeling good helps our performance. Ex good weather, work up feeling good. I felt good cause i had good night sleep. What to do to copy that environment to get same desired outcome.
