Document Summary

Exam 1 genetics and evolution (week 1-3): 2/05. Fruit flies are 10x more variable genetic wise. Mutations: somatic or germ-line, deleterious, neutral or advantageous. Allele frequencies= # of copies of an allele / total # of alleles in population. Evolution: a change in allele or genotype frequency in a population over time. Natural selection: change in alleles frequency over time based on impact on survival and reproduction, fitness measures the extent in with individuals genotype is represented in the next generation. Increases over all fitness over time- advantageous alleles. Activity ch 21: scientific inquiry and sexual selection: giraffes. Natural selection: the process whereby the organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. Population: a community of animals or plants among whose members interbreeding occurs. Selective pressure: any phenomena which alters the behavior and fitness of living organisms within a given environment.
