Charles sherrington gave the sites of contact their name: synapse. Synaptic transmission: the process of information transfer at a synapse. Electrical synapse was proven by edwin furshpan and daivd potter and akira watanabe. We know that electrical synapses are common in brains of invertebrates and vertebrates, including mammals. Chemical synapses were proven by otto loewi. He showed this by stimulating a frog heart with electrical impulse, which released neurotransmitter. Bernard katz, demonstrated fast transmission at the synapse between a motor neuron axon and skeletal muscle was chemically mediated. Chemical synapses comprise majority of the synapse in the central nervous system. Synapse: the specialized junction where one part of a neuron contacts and communicates with another neuron or cell type. The target cell is said to be postsynaptic: electrical synapse- allow the direct flow of ionic current from one cell to the next. These electrical synapses occur at gap junctions.
