Evidence-based practices: is when teachers use techniques and interventions that have been verified through rigorous research. Gold standard: randomized controlled trials, where students are randomly assigned to either a technique being studied or the business as usual group. The games between the groups are compared and if the intervention group does better repeatedly then it is validated. Large scale assessments: are commercially developed and administered the same way consistently at nation wide. Act of 2001 (or no child left behind) started it all! Act (idea) of 2004: required that all students with disabilities also be included in this nation wide assessment. Look at the chart on page 35. One out of 3 students report being bullied. 160,000 students stay home every day because they are afraid. Victims are two to nine times more likely to report suicidal thoughts. Nearly one in six students leave high school before earning a diploma. More than half of these dropouts are students of color.
