11:067:450 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Zona Glomerulosa, Zona Fasciculata, Zona Reticularis
Document Summary
It has multiple zones with multiple cell types. The inner layer is the medulla and the outer layer is the cortex. The medulla is actually not an endocrine tissue but a nervous tissue, part of the parasympathetic system. Zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata, zona reticularis, and then the medulla. The most active functional hormones are the aldosterone, cortisol, and androstenedione. Aldosterone is regulated by ang-ii, there is a conglomeration of cells. Aldosterone is a steroid hormone that regulates water balance and is under the control of vasopressin and other enzymes produced in the kidney. The majority of the cortex is made up by the zona fasciculata, where the cells are assembled in long structures and these cells are directly responsive to acth from the anterior pituitary. They are in the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis. Epinephrine and norepinephrine do not respond to the hypothalamic pituitary axis and are called catecholamines.
