C. altarpieces, contemporary italian examples are rarely, if ever, hinged multi-paneled. Italians use tempera (egg white mixed with mineral pigments) until the last quarter of the 15 oil. Very different appearance of tempera-based paint, which has bright, shiny, and sharply contoured areas, and oil-based paint, which is lustrous, blends with surrounding colors, and can achieve subtle, rich colors via glazes laid on top of each other. Whereas tempera dries fast, oil dries more slowly, allowing the artist to modify his colors. c. when they convert to th. Two major italian centers, florence and venice, the former famous for its drawing and focus on composition, the latter for its color, light, and application of paint. Bellini spent his whole life in venice and botticelli his whole life in florence but leonardo and michelangelo became so famous that they were awarded commissions in rome, or in the case of leonardo, in milan, even in france.
