Italians often tell stories on plaster walls using the fresco technique (painting onto a thin-grained layer of non-structural plaster while it is damp so that the pigments bond chemically with the wall) Donatello"s david is one of the earliest bronze sculptures cast in the lost-wax technique. Bronze sculpture was famous in antiquity which gave it immense prestige. Costly and difficult to cast a shell, which was the only solution because of the even greater cost of a solid cast, dangers of trying to do it, and enormous weight. What happen & what will come next. Comic strip like scenes move left to right separated by frame. Dog symbol of loyalty, sheep ignoring too. Cycle of mary cycle of christ = nativity = stable. Foreshortned angels breaking surface of painting illusionistically. Use of fresco underlay to show halo to stand out. Cloth between touch on christ body, too holy. Roman soldiers on right (lances & torches)
