Slavery is depicted as an american story when in reality it reflects a western hemisphere story. The initial goal was to extract gold from the west coast of africa, hence the name gold. Women controlled the slave market, at a local level, in the region. Slave coffle and forced march, no europeans. Slave river: slaves would bathe here at the end of their trek. Slaves would commit suicide by drowning themselves in the river. Transfer from coastal markets to european markets. Majority of slave deaths occurred in fortresses and castles, not in slaves ships. Elmina was originally meant to be a luxury resort. Separate torture for europeans and african americans. Dungeon was underneath the dutch reformed church. Coast castles all now have inscriptions reading: In everlasting memory of the anguish of our ancestors. May humanity never again perpetrate such injustice against humanity.
