I. the scientific method: method of inquiry- finding natural explanations for natural phenomena, limited to observable and measurable structures and process. Systematic method of investigating natural world process-not haphazard. Evaluate (evaluate statistic significance & evaluate correctness of results in comparison to prediction) if predictions are incorrect reevaluate hypothesis or experiment if predictions are correct repeat and verify the results if that turns out incorrect reevaluate hypothesis or experiment. What science can and cannot address: hypothesis must be testable and falsifiable, anything supernatural or religious is outside the bounds of science, no hypothesis is proven, always tentative. Exploration & discovery, hypothesis testing, community analysis & feedback, societal benefits & outcomes are all parts of science and are linked together. Hypothesis: testable explanation for observations based on available date; an educated guess. Theory: broad explanation with sig. support, leads to new hypothesis and accurate predictions. Law: statement of what always occurs under certain conditions.
