Community = association of populations of different species that live and interact in the same place at the same time. Study of interactions that determine distribution and abundance of individuals and populations in communities. Find patterns and processes common to wide variety of communities. Can be difficult because of many interactions between individuals and populations. Resource: anything from environment that meets needs of a particular species. Competition = for same resource in short supply -/- interaction use by one. Intraspecific competition between individuals of same species. To understand competition, you need to understand: If an organism"s habitat is its address , the niche is the organism"s profession. Ecological niche: sum of a species" use of biotic and abiotic resources = organism"s ecological role. How can organism uses materials in its environment. Takes into account all physical, chemical, and biological factors a species needs to survive, stay healthy, and reproduce. Niche potentially occupied by that species potential used resources.
