Three characteristics describe basic features shared by all animals: Obtaining nutrients: nutrition process of organisms taking in and making use of food material, animals must ingest organic molecules by eating other living organisms, materials eaten are digested within the body using enzymes. Larva sexually immature form that is morphologically distinct from adult. Larva may eat different food or live in different habitat relative to adult. Animal have characteristic (cid:498)body plans(cid:499) i. e. it is the blue print to different types of animals. Body plan (aka bauplan) set of morphological and developmental traits/features. Basic features of animals" body plan include: bilateral symmetry (two-sided sym) have, symmetry or absence of symmetry, radial sym no left or right side; no front or back, slicing results in mirror images. 2 axes of orientation: front to back, anterior end, posterior end, top to bottom, dorsal (back) side, ventral side.
