01:146:328 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Ocular Larva Migrans, Visceral Larva Migrans, Ethyl Acetate
Document Summary
10 october 2018: toxocara canis, elisa, perfect gold standard, gold standard, direct wet smear, formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation concentration. 2 mg of feces and a few drops of saline viewed on a slide. Not useful when the infection is low and leads to a false negative. Formalin preserves the specimen and the ethyl acetate extracts debris and fat from the feces. Mix 4 grams of feces with formalin and strain through gauze. Add formalin and ethyl acetate to pellet. Sediment at bottom will contain parasite eggs. Dogs either: ingest eggs, pregnant dog the larva can cross into the fetus, lactating dog the larve can transmit trans-mammary, dog ingests prey that previously ingested eggs and developed larva inside body. Visceral larva migrans: juveniles migrate through the tissues and do not complete normal development to adult stage. Undergo development arrest and mostly the juveniles go through an extended wandering through the body. Ocular larva migrans: produce inflammation and scarring leading to blindness.
