Document Summary

Chemistry is the study of composition, structure, properties and transformation of matter. Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. The building blocks of matter are atoms or molecules. The atom is the basic unit of all elements that enters into chemical transformations (reactions) Atoms have been given symbols to identify them (periodic table) hydrogen. Scientific method : sequence of steps that a scientist takes to acquire knowledge. ( don"t have to be a scientist to follow a scientific method ) Observation of a phenomenon (chemical/physical etc) could be as a result of experiments leading to empirical (experimental) facts- gathering data. It is a tested explanation of basic natural phenomena, which can be used to make further predictions. Laws: formulation and/or generalization of tested hypothesis (could be in mathematical form or otherwise). They tell us what happens, not why they happen no explanation. Sulfuric acid, (h2so4) broken down to elements by chemical techniques.
