Document Summary
The desert: used monument valley for his westerns, but was not the first to use it symbolically. A beautiful place that god created, untouched by human. Civilization : many negative elements, and when going inside the civilized elements, they are in the shape of boxes and trapped inside. Neutral, transitional space of the coach : sitting in an even smaller box, no one looking out the window, just waiting to get to the next town. First western for many people on the crew. Includes the standard western themes, like america, history, the past, the wilderness, the pioneer, the dream, tradition, etc. Not all of these elements are positive. Each has a counter-element that play against it. Outer shell: location, period, visual photography, characters, plot structure. The primary vehicle for genre dramatization is the character; the persona. Soul fights: character would be a bad person, but eventually find himself throughout the film. (william s. hart)
