The director knows what he"s going to get from jannings. He"s one of the best known actors at the top. Round character in the film; changes throughout the film. Most of his scenes take place in the school, when he is still himself. All his scenes in the classroom are lit up and filled with music, except for the last scene where he dies. He humiliates the students in front of everyone, and this is what causes the rebellion from them. He becomes that clown at the end: lola lola (marlene dietrich) The professor defended her, and when he asked her to marry him, she was so charmed she said yes. Her big famous laugh; she"s laughing at him for proposing to someone like her. Most of her scenes take place on the stage; the world of showbiz. They are filled with crowds, tiny spaces and messy.
