Self concept: concepts about ourselves; lots of layers to it. Uncertainty (uncertainty reduction theory: one of the first theory-we try to reduce uncertainty; we try to get information and ask questions; share information about yourself and themselves) Non-verbal elements: like proxemics, haptics (touch), immediacy (perceived closeness- how close do we think we are) Power: relationships we have with work people, class people-relationships that we don"t choose. Mutual awareness-you"re not in a relationship if the other person doesn"t know it. Influenced by outside forces-our relationship is influenced by our peers, our family, etc Enabling and limiting-some will support you or limit them. Complementary needs: religion, politics, how many kids, etc. Compare self to potential partners in terms of: Filter out people who fail to satisfy needs as a relationship partner. Different behaviors are enacted as relationships develop over time. Ability to negotiate relational stages determines relationship development. How messages define, reinforce, or modify the relationship that exists between interactants.
