Closed or direct: control is in interviewer. Hypothetical or open: control is in interviewee. Starts with with open and ends with closed. Common when you don"t know much so you get info and build off that. Starts with closed and ends with open. Common when you know a lot about interviewee at start of interview. Start with funnel, but then there"s an unexpected response, so you have to reopen the interview sequence.
