Unit 2: behaviors and dynamics of interpersonal relationships. Nonverbal communication: the medium through which information is converged through interaction. Intimate- x>2 ft: chronemics: orientation towards time, monochronic: a desire to do one thing at a time, polychronic: preference to engage in many activities at once, olfaction: scents and odors, body odors and environmental smells. Characteristics of nonverbal communication: universal meaning, variable intensity, simultaneous transmission, spontaneous transmission, automatic processing. Functions of nonverbal messages: communicating emotions: can also be a learned response to social situations, simulation: smile for a picture, working with customers, displaying emotions that are nto actually felt. Intensification: displaying emotions that are stronger than felt emotions, one upping- thanks for this gift i don"t like, deintensification: downplaying particularly strong emotions, masking: displaying a different emotion from the one that is truly felt, communicating linking. Moods: pervasive or lasting feelings that range from bad to good. Emotions: emotions: fleeting feelings tha arise in particular situations.
