Document Summary
You think a person controls his/her behavior. People believe they control their own behavior. A person"s behavior seems unavoidable in a situation. People believe their behavior is due to outside influences. People experience uncertainty on a regular basis. Communication is the way we reduce uncertainty. We are unsure how to act in an unfamiliar situation. Unsure what to think about someone or something. Uncertainty reduction theory: a formally stated theory. Axioms = statements that are taken to be true. As your verbal communication with a communication partner increases, your level of uncertainty about that person decreases; as a result, verbal communication continues to increase. When you first start a conversation with a stranger, it may be difficult. As your comfort level increases (and you find out more things about the other person), the conversation proceeds more smoothly. As welcoming nonverbal expressions increase, uncertainty decreases and vice versa.
