Exposure to violence- people who are constantly exposed to violence in the environment may adopt violent methods themselves. Lonnie athens, a well-known criminologist who links violence to early childhood experience with child abuse, has coined this phrase to describe how abused kids are turned into aggressive adults. Stages in the vp (#1: brutalization stage- during this phase, a young victim develops a belligerent, angry demeanor, as a result of being mistreated by abusive parents or caregivers. There are a number a facets in the brutalization stage. Violent subjugation: coercion into compliance by physical or verbal force. Personal horrification: an individual is exposed to violence directed at someone else. During this stage, the targets of violentization begin to understand their dilemma: violent performance stage- Brutalized youth may become belligerent and angry. When confronted at home, on the street, or at school, they respond with anger, hostile behavior.
