Possible causes of food insecurity (1) poor food distribution (2) poverty and income distribution. Thomas malthus (cid:1543) population will eventually plateau due to food scarcity. People used to put dates on this doom day: but we"re still here (doesn"t mean it"ll never happen) Other factors must be considered too, not just amount of farmland (cid:1543) but so far not (too much) But supply has been increasing at an even faster rate (cid:1543) new technologies, etc: more efficient. Reasons for increase in demand (1) population growth (2) income growth. Low income people spend the first increments to their income on necessities: esp food. New crop varieties that respond well (in terms of yield) to fertilizer. Network of international research institutes building on tradition of agricultural research in u. s. land- grant universities.
