Geriatrics: branch of medicine or social science dealing with elderly people. 1956- eisenhower creates the first federal council on aging. 1964- ucla- first college curriculum to study gerontology. 1965- congress passes the older americans act-administration on aging formed- aoa. 1985- aahperd- with their assoc. for active lifestyles and fitness-first functional fitness test developed. 1990"s- many studies and major scientific organizations endorse the importance of exercise to seniors. Chronological age: length of time, number of years or months, since birth. Functional age: other measures that determine the differences between individuals of the same age. Biological age: focuses on age in terms of biological or physiological processes and how it effects their behavior. Relative age: whether the individual is aging faster or slower than the average person of the same chronological age.
