Marsh was a diplomat, vermont lawyer, linguistic, and scholar who traveled across both europe and the mediterranean. For about twenty years he was the american ambassador to the kingdom of italy. Marsh published his book man and nature in 1864 and continued to work on it, publishing two more editions, until his death. His book which came well before the conservation movement, gave recognition to hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) a(cid:272)ti(cid:448)ity"s alteratio(cid:374) of landscapes. In this quote, marsh is describing the relationship between humans and the environment, but more specifically the impact that they have when using the resources that are naturally provided. He is saying that the earth is meant to provide these necessary tools, such as food in this case, to survive.
