Pre-industrial economy: agricultural, artisanal self-sufficiency & home as a site of production. Industrial/market economy: home as site of consumption, male was breadwinner: the public sphere- this was the man"s world it is where he held his work, capital accumulation and participation in public discourse through work with other men. Women could not vote at a federal level but many states had already instituted women"s rights such as wyoming, illinois, and new york. Passes in 1919 with the 19th amendment: comstock law (1873) federal law that made it a crime to sell or distribute materials that could be used for contraception or abortion.
