Theory of syntax which provides a way to distribute anaphoric elements in sentence structures. The goal of binding theory is to identify the syntactic relationship that can or must hold between a given pronoun or noun and its antecedent (wikipedia, 2016). Not all dps associated with a specific individual work the same way. John is a dp and himself is a dp. Anaphors are elements that get meaning from something else in the sentence (an antecedent). An element that does not need to refer to another element in a sentence- it can take its meaning from an entity in the world as well. Antecedent: element prior to an anaphor on which it depends for meaning. Coindex (coindexing): notation used to keep track of where the antecedent and its dependent are. Assignment function: each letter is associated with an individual. You can"t coindex the possessor phrase alongside the possessor.
