Strikers took authority by ceasing all work in many major cities. Overpowered the police, militia, and federal troops. All train workers stopped working and uncoupled all the train cars. Killed one rioter who was defending the switch to start the trains. Berkeley light guards pulled from strike bearing colonel gave up, was helpless. Berkeley light guards came in, broke up militia blocking the trains from working. July 1877 first great american mass strike. Martinsburg, pa: baltimore and ohio (b&o) railroad had 2 pay cuts over an 8-month period. Mayor of town went to governor to get fed soldiers in. Great upheaval of 1877: spontaneous, nationwide, virtually general strike. Box-makers and candlemakers in wheeling on strike ass well. More strikes kept on happening, more and more support for strikers people came in crowds. Workers felt as is they were just as the rolling stock or locomotives squeezed for every drop of profit and their pay was cut.
