Instructions: break down the following words into morphemes. In breaking down these words (morpheme decomposition) we find that each morpheme seems to carry meaning. We understand that anti- is a morpheme within the lexicon and it attaches to certain morphemes and changes them into different morpheme classes. We deal with a standardized methodology when categorizing morphemes. The lexicon is a holder of morphemes and morphemes have three facets: Compositionality: to keep the meaning of a morpheme when it is attaching to other morphemes. Recombination: when a morpheme attaches to another grammatically. In synchronic linguistics the main question is whether or not a child, when learning the language, would break down a word into certain morphemes. It is not concerned with harking back to the origin of the language to prove that a root is a morpheme.
