Session 10: managing a positive and productive work environment. Unity of effort is very important: everyone should be going in the same direction. Collaboration can help other groups achieve their goals. The traditional model of hierarchy and direct oversight is not effective anymore: heterarchical integration has to many links. Integrating mechanisms are needed to pull everything together: structure, culture, strategy, incentives, and monitoring provide a collective fabric that support the flow of information and collaboration across the organization necessary for effective integration. Culture is the shared beliefs, expectations, values, and norms which influence and organization. Culture pro(cid:448)ides a (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374) grou(cid:374)d of people"s efforts a(cid:374)d (cid:272)hoi(cid:272)es. Culture can encourage and reinforce positive behaviors and discourage negative behaviors: establish and reinforce social rules. Take responsibility for the whole task, not just the part you are working on. Value knowledge and make what you know accessible to others. Explore potential by experimenting, looking for alternative opinions.
