Document Summary
Music - the art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. Classical refers to music within western culture that contains the highest degree of sophistication. Not part of mainstream music in america. Church would support music for celebration and mass and grew more sophisticated and elaborate over time (9th century - 17th century) Not all church music at the time was considered classical. Evolution of sacred music began in the medieval period where monarchs would allow sacred and secular music at their courts. Since not all nobles had musical capabilities, they hired people and this soon became a stable job for musicians -- creating the idea of a professional musician in western society. During the renaissance (1450 - 1620), nobles continued having musicians on their estates. Medici family is an example that funded the arts.
