Document Summary
Tonal systems - possibility that sounds can occur concurrently has led to a variety of systems. Harmonic system that dominates western music is governed by 3 note combos called notes or triads. Triadic harmony - 2 primary polar concepts work against each other. Consonance - describes sounds that are pleasing and express pleasant sense of stability. Dissonance - notes that contrast and are unstable; contain tension. Chords are generated using notes within the key (the scale or mode) Each chord is built upon different note of the scale. Root - the note the chord is built upon. Chords are constructed by stacking notes which exist in the scale at the interval of a above the root. Chords are numbered according to the note upon which the chord is built. Upper case numbers indicate that the chord is major, lower, case indicates that the chord is minor. Major and minor chords are the most common.
