Soul music reflected the search for african american identity. The term soul had been used by african americans during the 1950s to suggest the essence of being an african american. Gospel and rhythm and blues styles of the 50s. Most soul singers found their voice by singing gospel music in the church. The most important labels to promote soul were: Pioneer of r&b/gospel fusion, known as rhythm and gospel. Sold millions of records, became a commercial embodiment of soul. Initial success of soul is attributed to atlantic records. Atlantic-stax partnership flourished mid 1960"s to 1968. Recorded local black artists (booker t and the mg"s, otis redding) 1961: signed agreement with atlantic records to distribute and promote all of their artists. Partnership with atlantic was successful because not only did atlantic have access to stax artists (otis redding), they used the stax house band for atlantic artists such as aretha franklin, sam & dave, and percy.
