Document Summary

How does descartes prove the existence of particular things, descartes prove the existence of particular things by saying that they are capable of existing because they are the subject- matter of pure mathematics since he perceives them clearly. Then he talks about two way he perceives things, one is through imagination and other is pure understanding. He can imagine objects such as triangle and apply pure understanding to it, but he can"t imagine a chiliagon but only apply pure understanding to it. I cannot be the cause of this idea because the production of these ideas does not require any intellectual act and it is independent of my will and cooperation. The mind is a passive faculty of receiving/understanding the innate ideas and so it cannot the be active faculty producing sensory ideas. So the mind can"t be responsible for the cause of the material things.
