Id is animal like (it is having all three that makes us human) Used to be that religion (heaven) was the biggest form of delayed gratification. Religion can ask a lot because the later reward is so great. Judeo-christian religions outlaw all the id (greed, gluttony, lust, etc) Problems: creates tension, psychic cost of continuously denying desires. The fight between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie (both sides fighting, not one sided) Commercialization of any/all products (but in this case especially the commodification of time) No reason to connect with others under capitalism. The system separates you from others and also your work. Creativity and intelligence and connection to the product/service is part of human nature. Communist manifesto is a diagnosis of modern life.
