They often suffer different kinds of abuse; it is rare that a man suffers from sexual abuse. Intimate partner abuse- someone with whom you share a space. Under nj violence statute, the following qualify as intimate partners: spouses, former intimate partners, and roommates. From 8am until 5pm, monday through friday anybody who is a domestic violence survivor can go to their county or municipal court to file a complaint and receive a protective order. The protective order is known as a tro, temporary restraining order, which lasts 10 days. At the end of the 10 days, you will return to court for the judge to decide whether you get an fro, a final restraining order, which lasts for life. When the judge grants an fro, the judge can put certain restrictions on the person who abused you. If you are married they can make the person pay spousal/child support. They can make the person forfeit weapons (weapon forfeiture).
