Politics & Culture 10/23 (Wed) • The Lessons for Historical Memory o The past may be fabricated, but it is oftentimes done for practical reasons  Little is known about the actual history  We’re not interested in actual history  Conscious effort to keep symbolic meaning compatible with times  Non-deified figures have it easy o History is not as important as the lessons it teaches, and the guidelines it provides o Alternative narratives are only attacked when they are a potent opposition, • Historiography as Academic Discipline o Historiography is the study of how history is written, what is remembered, and how it is remembered in society  Historical memory is the tool of elites to “invent traditions”
