The fruit in the garden of eden is supposed to open the eyes of adam and eve to both the good and evil of the world. It was said to make them such as god in terms of knowing about these topics. That is to say i the eyes of god the perfect human is one that does not know evil but at the same time does not know the meaning of good. It seems the fall of man was necessary in order to even fully understand god and how he is the good in the world that goes against the evil. However, god does things that seem evil when looked at objectively. His punishments are heavy handed and often end up killing many.
